My goal for April was centered around gardening. I am happy to say that I have completed almost all of the tasks that I had set out for myself this month:
#1 Top up our garden beds with manure and soil. Done! #2 Remove old leaves from our strawberry bed & add additional soil. Done! #3 Order tomato plants & buy containers for them. Done! #4 Plant potatoes, swiss chard, kale, green onions, peas, lettuce, beets, carrots and zucchini. Below is our plan for our large three beds. We will plant the zucchini in the one smaller bed that we have near our deck. Done!
#5 Put together a herb planter with cilantro, basil and thyme. Not yet, but I have the soil, planter and seeds all ready to go.
#6 Plant flower seeds in the front and back flower beds. Half done…. still need to add some to the front
#7 Put bloodmeal down to keep rabbits away from our front flower beds- they are eating my tulips already! Done! Needs to be done again though as it just rained…. #8 Put grass seed down in areas that are looking bare. Done! #9 Reattach our rain barrel. Done! #10 Start saving and drying egg shells in order to add to our soil. Done!
I am excited to share the first update on our garden for the 2016 growing season.
I ended up moving the lettuce into a container as the bed with the carrots and beets was going to be too squished. We planted both summer lettuce and buttercrunch lettuce this year.
We decided to plant three different types of potatoes this year: russet, red and yukon. Two are later producers while one is mid summer. Two of the tomato plants which we have ordered will be put in this bed.
Our rhubarb is thriving already and I have the feeling we will be eating lots of it this year! Our chives and perennials are also doing very well.
Our Iris’s are starting to bloom…..Because we have had such a rough time getting zucchini to grow in the past I planted 1 yellow plant and 4 green ones (2 different varieties). Hopefully, we can get two plants to grow and produce in this area in the end.
Our tulips are starting to open and they are always such a needed blast of colour this time of year.
Our pear tree was full of blossoms before we had rain over the weekend. Fingers crossed that we get some pears this year! There you go! That is the current state of our gardens and my goals for the month.
How is your garden doing this year?
