Nathan nursing in the car on Canada Day 2011
It’s been a year since I wrote this post and I felt I needed to write a follow up. After that monumental struggle (and boy did it feel that way to me!) Nathan began nursing as if it had never been an issue. We quickly fell into a 4 times a day routine and life was good. He started to refuse a bottle even if it had breast milk in it and for months I was his only source of nutrition.
Life went on and Nathan turned one last month. Nursing him during the day had become a cumbersome event since he would stop every few seconds to look around at what his brothers were doing. I decided to switch his two day time feedings to cows milk in a sippy cup and he quickly took to it. He liked the notion of being able to walk around with a sippy cup in his hand and take a drink whenever he wanted.
At 13 months I am still nursing him first thing in the morning and before bed most nights. I’m not sure how long I will nurse him for and I’m not sure how to go about the whole weaning thing. My older boys both self weaned when I hit the 3 month mark into the next pregnancy. This time however, I am not pregnant so I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I do feel a change coming on though and I’m thinking he’ll be fully weaned in a month or two.
Regardless of how our nursing days together end I am still immensely greatful for the support that I received and the decision I made to continue trying to breastfeed. While those first six weeks were difficult on many levels in the end they were worth everything to be able to breastfeed my son.
